Hank's Stringing Corner

FAQ's about Strings
How can I get more control or power from my racket?  If you want more control string your racket with a softer string and higher tension.  High tensions add control.  Lower tensions add more power.  For even more power, lower the tension and play with a thinner guage string.

Is thinner string the best?  Thinner guage string plays better but breaks more often.  Tennis string ranges from 15 guage (very thick) to 20 guage (extremely thin).  Most rackets are strung with 16 or 17 guage string.

Why do my strings break?  Hitting the ball hard does not break the strings.  Putting a lot of spin on the ball breaks the strings!  The strings move more when a player adds spin to the ball.  The movement of the strings causes friction which "saws" the strings in half and break.

How often should I re-string?  You should re-string your frame as many times in a year as you play in a week.  IF you play twice a week, re-string twice a year.  If that sounds too often, you should re-string a minimum of once a year for best results.
